Version 5.30 UPGRADE
---------------------------
This Version of VBBS sees the introduction of "Function
Blocks". Function Blocks provide a SysOp with the ability to define any
key with any function which is A) Internal within the EXE, B) VScript
C) external EXE, BAT, or COM or, D) transfer control to another function
block. (please see the main VBBS documentation for details).
Other highlights of 5.30 include the WWIVLink network within the
Multinet, true ansi color in the Virtual Full Screen Editor, FSE now
uses an optional spelling checker which can be appended by defined SLs,
Tagline toggle for each message base allowing multiple taglines or none
at all for each sub, Handles/Real Name option for BBS accounts, extended
search functions for Email, Messages, and Network lists, direct master
filelist download, Autovalidation of SysOps, most BBS displays can now be
aborted with the spacebar, and other small improvements here and there.
The first change you will notice however, is the way in which
VBBS is installed. MOST of the installation and upgrade installation
function is now handled by an INSTALL.EXE. All you need to do is to
backup your .ANS, .ASC, TXT and Userfile.DAT files and run INSTALL.
Everything is done for you (except initial CHANNEL.CFG setup)
automatically.
The easiest BBS in the world to install, just got even EASIER!
SPECIAL NOTE:
VBBS now uses a BBS.EXE in place of BBS.BAT. The commandline syntax
has CHANGED. No longer is it "BBS <port #>". The *NEW* Command line
goes: BBS <channel #>
Channel numbers can be configured for any port with optional
reassignments of IRQs etc. This new setup allows VBBS to break through
the 4 node barrier which previously limited LAN VBBS installations and
is overall a much more efficient method.
---> Single node VBBS installations will ALL use the same startup comand
line; BBS 1
The first channel (channel 1), is the ONLY channel which will do duty
for bundling VNET packets, running events, etc.
BBS.EXE loads as a RAM resident and is much more sophisticated than the
old BBS.BAT method.
---> VBBS 5.30 *MUST* use the updated VWW4 ver 5.30 EXE to properly
use WWIVnet Filename: VWW4V53A.ZIP
VBBS 5.30 replaces ALL executable files, and ALL menus.
Please remember to back up your system .dat,.ans, asc and.txt files
before upgrading. Note the changes to the FSE and make sure that the new
FEDIT.TXT help file replaces the old one.
* UPGRADE INSTALLATION FROM PREVIOUS VBBS VER *
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
VBBS 5.30
----------------------- (New Installations Please read VBBS530.DOC)
UPGRADE Installations from ver 5.21:
1) Backup your current .ANS, .ASC, .TXT and .DAT files to a temp dir.
2) Having extracted the VBBS530.ZIP to a seperate dir run the "INSTALL"
exe as an upgrade existing installation and name the correct path to
your actual VBBS dir. (your .CFG files will NOT be overwritten)
3) Verify settings in Vconfig and change Channel 1 in CHANNEL.CFG to
reflect your modem port. (Base addresses and IRQ addresses are set
automatically)
4) a. Copy all of the files from your old VBBS Data directory
to your VBBS Data directory.
b. Copy over old LOGIN.ANS, LOGIN.ASC, NEWUSER.TXT, LOGOFF.TXT
to the defined VBBS TEXT dir.
VBBS versions prior to 5.21 should be replaced by ver 5.30 installed as
a NEW installation.
